Disruptive technology, Machine Tool example, more than 10% increase in market share in Japan in less than ten years, - why? evolution of CNC control and integration. FANUC developed very advanced computer controlled machining.
The labour became less skilled and became replaced by capital (by capital, I mean the machine and the integrated control system).
Core competences and company reward system may be built to reinforce the core philosophies that are being challenged by the cheaper technology, this may lead to strong resistance to change and a refusal to adapt to the upcoming change. The fact that very few technology companies stay at the absolute peak of the industry for very long before being knocked off the pedestal by a challenger with a cheaper/better/faster/more powerful (etc etc) product.
